Ga DDS: Georgians Must Continue to Carry Their Physical Driver’s Licenses, Law Enforcement Will Ask for it During Traffic Stops

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) reminds customers to continue to always carry your physical driver’s license with you, it’s the law.  The newly launched Georgia Digital Driver’s License and ID is only accepted at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints (…).

If stopped by law enforcement, customers will be required to display their physical driver’s licenses (hard card or paper temporary).  Law enforcement officials do not accept Digital Driver’s Licenses at this time.

“With the busy holiday weekend upon us, please continue to carry the hard copy of your Georgia driver’s license or ID.  It will be necessary to provide a physical card when interacting with Law Enforcement.  While we are delighted with the popularity of Georgia’s Digital credentials, please be patient as we move through this pilot with TSA and remember to always carry your physical Georgia driver’s license with you,” said DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore

“DPS is excited that the Department of Driver’s Services has adopted a digital driver’s license for travel by air, but a physical license must be available for travel by roadway.  The Official Code of Georgia, 40-5-29 dictates ‘a. Every licensee shall have his or her driver’s license in his or her immediate possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle.’ and ‘b. 1. When records of the department indicate that a license has been issued in an electronic format, a law enforcement officer may demand such display be made by physical format,” said Colonel Christopher C. Wright.

“b. 1. When records of the department indicate that a license has been issued in an electronic format, a law enforcement officer *may demand* such display be made by physical format.”

“May demand” does not mean “shall demand.” If a citizen has an electronic form of their DL, that should suffice. Look at a calendar—it is 2023, not 1823. Cops need to be ready to accept a device-to-device transfer of the credential. Of course, when they run the tag, the DLs of the registered owners should pull up on their in-car computer screens and portable devices. The insurance info should appear as well since most states already have it.

“Good evening, Mr. X. I am Deputy Z with That County Sheriff’s Department. I saw your valid driver’s license and that you are the registered owner of this car. We show you have Gorilla Insurance. Thank you for keeping everything in order.

“The traffic stop is for [insert reason]. Can you try to avoid that in the future? I will not delay you by asking unnecessary questions because standing on the side of a roadway is dangerous for both of us. Safe travels.”

The traffic stop took three minutes. Everyone leaves with a smile. Nobody had to reach for anything. Nobody gets angry at a cop fishing for information attempting to turn a traffic violation into a criminal investigation.

The supreme Court ruled already and I don’t know why everybody doesn’t follow the law but we do not need a driver’s license to operate our cars unless we are in commerce we are just travelers we are not doing business and there is case law we do not need to driver’s license registration all those things it is the law so I don’t know how the states are doing this digital driver’s license thing it’s totally illegal look it up this is nothing but the truth…. Love the truth and follow the law everybody
